Some of my friends on a discussion board for mothers started to talk about the mooncup. (We are a group of women that has had contact since we got a positive result on a pregnancy-test). The mooncup discussion has reached 284 posts (today) and the conclusion is that the mooncup is fantastic in every way. I was not the first one to try, but I finally did last week.
What on earth is it??
The Mooncup is a reusable menstrual cup around two inches long and made from soft silicone rubber. It is worn internally like a tampon but collects menstrual fluid rather than absorbing. Unlike tampons the Mooncup is not a disposable product, so you only need to buy one.
That was a good enough reason for me to try. Another great reason is that i hate the feeling of tampons and towels sucking me dry. It´s itchy, expensive and generates huge amounts of waste. (Just imagine a weeks use of tampons and pads every month, every year from the age of 13 to 50)
The National Women’s Health Network states that twelve billion pads and 7 million tampons pollute landfills annually in the US.
I´m not a big fan of having my period, i think it´s a waste of time and blood. How can one tiny egg cause a week of bleeding? But this time, at the end of the week i caught myself thinking “It it over already?”. (Freaky). But i got a bit disappointed when i noticed how little i actually bleed….not much to complain about. But the whole period is not much to complain about with the mooncup. You can´t feel that it´s there (you may even forget that you are having the period), you won´t need to empty it that often, you feel clean, fresh and not itchy. You will never have to swear on a public toilet, because you forgot to bring a new tampon, again.
I was a bit skeptical in the beginning. How messy would it be? Isn´t it gross? But it was not messy or gross at all. Let me tell you, tampons are more messy and pads more gross.
One last, and important tip from me….cut the stem. It´s far to long, just cut the whole thing of, you won´t need it.

(The menstrual cup in the picture is a Keeper, very similar to the mooncup but made from natural gum rubber instead of medical grade silicone)
